  • Hill City; BLACK HILLS CENTRAL RAILROAD; 222 Railroad Avenue; 866.FOR.1880 or 605.574.2222; Seasonal, varying schedule, special events and excursions, displays (SEE: South Dakota State Railroad Museum.  NOTES: 1]. Trains are steam powered; 2]. On-board food service for Hill City Western Heritage Festival, Mother’s Day, the Wine Express into the West in September, and for Octoberfest in October; 3]. Alternate boarding location: 103 Winter Street, Keystone, South Dakota.

  • __________; SOUTH DAKOTA STATE RAILROAD MUSEUM, 222 Railroad Avenue, Building A; 605.574.9000; Year-around, daily and partial week/varies by season, railroad buildings, equipment, excursions (SEE Black Hills Central Railroad), displays.  NOTES: 1]. Community traces railroad heritage to the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad; 2]. Adjoining the Black Hills Central Railroad, the Museum occupies a new building designed to resemble an engine house; 3]. Content is devoted to railroading in South Dakota and the northern plains region.

  • Keystone; BLACK HILLS CENTRAL RAILROAD; 103 Winter Street; 866/FOR-1880 or 605/574-2222; SEE: Hill City.

  • Lead; THE BLACK HILLS FT. PIERRE RAILROAD ROUNDHOUSE (RESTAURANT); 106 Glendale Drive; 605.722.1901; Year around, days/hours vary with seasons. NOTES: 1]. Former 6-stall roundhouse built in 1901 by the Homestake Mining Company; 2]. Includes a replica of full size train engine, tender, and dining car, providing the opportunity to dine in an early 1900’s dining car.

  • Madison; DEPOT RAILROAD MUSEUM; 315 South Egan Avenue; 605.256.2454: Year-around, partial week/varying hours, railroad building, displays.  NOTES: 1]. Restored 1905 Milwaukee Road depot with original ticket window and cabinetry in place; 2]. Madison Farmers Elevator, a 100-year old working grain elevator, is adjacent, served by BNSF railroad; 3]. Building used by the Chamber of commerce.

  • __________; PRAIRIE VILLAGE; 2 miles west on Highway 34; 800.693.3644 or 605.256.3644; Seasonal, regular schedule Saturdays at 2:00 p.m.), buildings, equipment, excursion, displays. NOTES: 1]. Operates frequently on Railroad Days and during the Steam Threshing Jamboree, plus two dinner trains during the latter; 2]. Equipment on display includes a rarity: the Chapel Car Emmanuel.

  • Spearfish; D.C. BOOTH HISTORIC NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY AND ARCHIVES; 423 Hatchery Circle; 605.642.7730; Seasonal, variously daily or partial week and by appointment, equipment, displays.  NOTES: 1]. Representative of the ten “Fish Cars” operated by the U. S. Fish Commission between 1873 and 1947; 2]. A 5’ model built in 1897 on exhibit in adjoining museum; 3]. These cars traveled more that 2 million miles, and fish messengers traveled an additional 8 million miles to deliver more than 72 million live fish.

  • __________; SPEARFISH RECREATIONAL TRAIL; 3rd Street off Fruitdale Street; South 27th Street at East Colorado Boulevard; Ex- Chicago, Burlington & Quincy route; 5.2 miles; paved.  NOTES: 1]. From Spearfish Canyon, along Spearfish Creek, through a small forested area, the D. C. Booth National Fish Hatchery and downtown; 2]. There are other parking locations along the route of the trail.
